Hipdot has been breaking the mold with amazing makeup collections for a few years now, and their new My Chemical Romance collection is no different. A few stand-out collaborations have been with Kesha and Tapatio Hot Sauce. Their newest collection with MCR broke the internet with the response and sold out in one day. As a fan of MCR for the past 15 years, I can’t say I’m surprised!
My Chemical Romance is a goth rock band from New Jersey formed in 2001 in response to the September 11th attacks. The song “Skylines and Turnstiles” off their first full-length album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love was about the impact of the attacks. Hipdot’s collaboration with the band is inspired by their iconic 2004 album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. This album launched the band into a new level of popularity, going platinum in less than a year.
Hipdot truly captured the colors of this era of My Chemical Romance, a trio of colors which I refer to as blood red, black death, and pale ghost white. The eyeshadow palette is a perfect blend of the color palette of the artwork from that album as well as how the band dressed at the time. MCR is known for changing up their look for every album they release, and I can’t help but hope that they’ll put out more makeup collections for all of their albums.
The collection consists of the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge eyeshadow palette, a double sided eyeliner, a double sided brush, and a pin that only comes with the complete box set. The collectors set retails for $64 and comes in a box. I was a bit disappointed when I saw there wasn’t lipsticks or other products, but once I tried out the collection, it totally made sense. As someone who consumed every interview and video from that era of the band, their style of makeup was rough, edgy, and intense. The wide edge of the eyeliner is perfect for intensely smudged black liner around the eyes.
Again, I was surprised to see the 9 pan palette consisted of 8 matte shades and one grey shimmer. After trying out the palette, it makes sense. This curated set of matte colors is everything you need for a goth look identical to Gerard’s during the Three Cheers era. I remember watching videos of him apply his makeup, it was quick, vibrant, and intense.
The reds in this palette are some of the best I’ve ever tried. I used Pitchfork Red as a base color in this look and the slightest tap of the brush on the pan gave me a full pigment color payoff. The shadows blended beautifully and it was easy to get the exact effect I wanted.
Even the black shadow exceeded my expectation. It was easy to layer the black liner with the black shadow to ensure that the black of the look was pitch dark and perfectly matte. It doesn’t smudge all over the place or have a lot of fall out, but still blends and builds into the darkest black ever. Just like my soul.
Once again, I wasn’t sure that I’d find a need for a double-ended black liner with two different style tips. Once again, I was wrong! I used the blunt end of the liner to cover my entire lid, waterline, and the roots of my lashes to really ensure that my eyes were as black as could be. I used the thin end to clean it up and get into the harder to reach spots. The liner doesn’t dry down matte, it’s more glossy. I packed on the black shade from the palette, Serpent Son, over the liner to mattify it and lock it into place. This liner formula is super waterproof and intensely black.
The double-sided brush is great to bring on the go. It’s really the bare bones of what you need to do any eye look. Both brushes have a metal sleeve that slides over the brush so you can replace the cap without getting the brush hairs stuck in the cap and bending them. This is super useful for traveling. You can throw this in a makeup bag without worrying about the brushes getting dirty or ruined.
I adore this collection even more than I thought I would. The collection captures the band, the album, and the style of their aesthetics. The collection is more than just inspired by the band; it allows you to do your makeup like My Chemical Romance. I’m going to treasure this collection forever as a perfect crystallization of one of my favorite bands. This album and this band was an integral part of my teen years. I truly feel that they did it justice. I hope there are more to come!
Updates: This collection sold out within the first day of the launch. Preorder has also sold out. I will update this post as I know more!
